RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
TARGET: 80%
Socially Responsible volumes
Halls are committed to Responsible Sourcing principles and nurturing a diverse, socially and environmentally sound global supplier network by upholding and driving standards through robust procurement practises.
69%
SOCIAL ASSURANCE
Human rights are embedded into our procurement strategy and we we are seek to ensure that fruit from Halls is produced where human rights are respected, where working conditions are safe, remuneration is fair, where there is no discrimination in recruitment or occupation and where forced labour, child labour or human trafficking is eliminated.
Socially Responsible
Volume FY25
When sourcing from high-risk countries, we hold ourselves to the highest social standards to drive accountability and improvement across our supply chain. In our latest reporting period (March 2024 to February 2025) 69% of our suppliers met these elevated benchmarks. This represents a slight drop in the 5-year upward trend, but through analysis of our transparent and traceable supply chain, we are able to identify where further supplier development needs to be undertaken to strengthen assurances for the future.
However, this does not imply a lack of assurance, as 92% of sourced volumes were verified against at least the GlobalG.A.P. GRASP standard, providing a strong foundation of social assurance in the Halls supply chain.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSURANCE
Certified Good Agricultural Practices are a prerequisite for products grown and sourced by Halls. In addition, we actively monitor water stewardship across our supply chain, giving preference to producers in low- to medium-risk water regions or those with certified water stewardship practices in high-risk areas.

FOOD WASTE
TARGET
Reduce by Half
Maximisation of yield is a goal embedded throughout our value chain and effective waste control begins in the orchards. Our supplier relationships are founded on openness, trust, and shared expertise, enabling us to work directly on the ground with our growers, collaborating on horticultural practices that support both yield and quality. We then rigorously monitor quality through the value chain to ensure fruit is handled appropriately at every step.
55%
REDUCTION
in food waste
One of our earliest commitments was to minimise food waste in our operations, to increase financial viability, maximise inputs through delivery of healthy foods to our customers and reduce unnecessary carbon emissions.
As a natural and fresh product, fruits cannot always be sold as intended, so we follow a waste hierarchy, prioritising redirection into the human food chain through oil extraction or processing. Where this is not feasible, residual waste is repurposed for biomass energy conversion, supplied to local farms for animal feed or composted—ensuring that every step of our supply chain contributes to a more circular and responsible food system.
In 2024, we strengthened our quality control team, a key line of defence, to enhance early issue detection and foster continuous dialogue with suppliers and customers. This proactive approach enables us to take swift corrective action and strategically allocate produce across downstream channels—minimising waste, preserving value, and maximising grower returns.
Food waste has steadily reduced each year, equating to a 55% reduction since 2020. Waste represented 0.8% of total sales volume in the financial period ending February 2025.

CLIMATE CHANGE
TARGET:
Understand and Assess
Climate Change Impacts
Halls committed to minimise the negative impact of our operations in key areas:
Carbon Footprint | On farm water management | Packaging
CARBON FOOTPRINT
Halls has adopted the Confronting Climate Change reporting tool, developed by Blue North to help manage and quantify our risk and target 'hotspots' for reduction.
Monitoring inputs at Halls Mataffin packhouse and Halls Forest Hill Farm is ongoing, although due to recent transitions within the business in South Africa like for like reporting is not possible.
However scoped emissions against regional benchmarks have consistently performed well. In the latest reporting period Halls Forest Hill Farm was 0.17kg Co2e/ kg fruit, 63% below the regional benchmark.
171
LESS TONNES CO2
HALLS FOREST HILL FARM
In the latest reporting period Halls Forest Hill Farm emissionsequated to 0.17kg Co2e/kg fruit, 63% below the regional benchmark and down from 0.33 Co2e/kg fruit in the previous reporting period. The comprehensive emission strategy includes:
-
Avoidance of synthetic fertilisers or pesticides in favour of biological applications – only biological products were used in the reporting period
-
Applications are only made when required, according to pest monitoring
-
Orchard terracing facilitated copper application with mistblower rather than handgun, reducing application rates by 25%
-
Precise calibration of spraying equipment for optimal application
-
Water efficiency programme
-
Vehicles are serviced and maintenance with all loads optimally planned to reduce unnecessary emissions
HALLS MATAFFIN PACKHOUSE
At Halls Mataffin packhouse, the investment in solar continues to return environmental value with 18% of the energy used in the operation provided by solar power. This removed 171 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere in the latest reporting period.
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
Scope 1 and 2 emissions are monitored and assessed.
Halls France (Rungis) have invested in SENSORFACT to provide detailed reporting on the usage of electricity and CO2 at each packing line and in the ripening chambers. The first reports will be available in the next reporting period where the impacts can be assessed.
ON FARM WATER USE
Halls Forest Hill farm is located in the mist belt of Tzaneen and benefits from high levels of rainfall and a carefully planned water management strategy. 40% of the orchards are ‘dry land’ depending on natural rainfall and soil moisture and requiring no irrigation.
10l/kg
Water Use for Avocado
This results in extremely low water use for avocados from Halls Forest Hill, a farm which brings into sharp relief the inaccuracies of generalised headlines which declare all avocado as water intensive.
PACKAGING

Halls seek to ensure that we continually reduce negative impact on the environment in the management of how we receive and present our products. We balance the need to protect and maintain fruit quality with serving a circular econom by following the 4Rs principle to Refuse, Reduce, Re-use or Recycle.
Halls use recycled and recyclable content wherever possible and are pleased to offer a wide range of sustainable packaging solutions to our clients.
DATA SECURITY
TARGET:
Protect Our Data and that of our stakeholders
Protection of data within our business is increasingly important, especially as the threat evolves and grows. Robust protections have been put into place against unauthorised access to our systems and, as our staff may be the last line of defence, awareness training is mandated across the business to maintain our digital safety.
CYBER ESSENTIALS CERTIFICATION
Halls International obtained certification under the UK Governments minimum standard of cyber security for organisations of all sizes based in the UK or with offices internationally. The annually renewable certification scheme is aligned to five technical controls designed to prevent the most common internet-based cyber security threats.
The controls implemented address potential vulnerabilities, helping reduce risk of data breaches and improve our overall cyber resilience. Certification to the Cyber Essentials standard provides confidence in our commitments to systems and data security.

TRAINING
184
HOURS TRAINING
All new users are onboarded to comprehensive cyber-security awareness training and in the reporting period all staff were mandated to follow 10 courses, distributed through the year, resulting in a total of 11, 044 minutes of completed training, equivalent to ~1hr20 minutes per employee.
Training courses were followed up with a series of simulated phishing tests throughout the year. In cases where users failed these tests, further remedial training was issued which focused on specific risks and risky behaviours identified through the simulations.
